SLOVENIA AT THE CENTRE
OF THE GAME
Somewhere in the middle of 2006, (i.e. 18 months before
taking over the conductor’s baton of the EU), the then leader
of the Core Working Group on Preparations for the EU
Presidency said, this is going to be the biggest national project
since the attainment of independence. As usual, whenever
Slovenia is faced with major international challenges, we were
surrounded with doubts about our ability to take the wheel.
But in the end, Slovenes always collectively carry out the
required task. And so we did. Irrespective of the proximity of
the elections and the opposition’s election campaign during
the Presidency.
For 182 days of 2008, the government was focused primarily
on the Presidency. The results are equally proportionate, and
so are the evaluations from individuals who kept a vigilant
eye on us.
Slovenia has positioned itself at the centre of the game said
the President of the European Commission, Mr. José Manuel
Barroso, and this statement summarizes this special edition
of Sinfo as best as possible. In words and pictures, this edition
brings you a review of Slovenia’s Presidency at the helm of the
EU. It chronicles the vital successes of the Presidency, colours
them with commentaries from respected authorities in the
civil and political sphere, and summarizes the organizational
data of the 6-month period.
In only ten years, Slovenia has passed many demanding tests
-it negotiated membership, and fulfilled the monetary and
security criteria to adopt the euro and join Schengen, and
passed the major test of the Presidency, without pomp, and
with cool professionalism. Slovenia has proven that the big
bang - the enlargement of the EU with 10 new countries in
May 2004 - was a successful project.
So, can Slovenia still be called a new member?
